1. Physical and Spatial- Students shall develop an understanding of the physical and spatial characteristics and applications of geography.
There's a Map on My Lap! by Tish Rabe- This book is helps beginning readers to learn about different kinds of maps and their different formats as well as teaches them how to read symbols on the maps. There are also a lot of funny facts throughout the book that the kids will love and this is just a fun book for them to read or have read to them that teaches them a little about geography.
Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney- In this book a young girl shows readers herself on a map of her room, her house, her street, her country, and the world and then teaches readers how to find their own countries, states, and towns on maps. This is a very colorful book and children will have fun with it as well as learn more about maps and how to read them.
2. Culture and Diversity- Students shall develop an understanding of how cultures around the world develop and change.
The Kids' Multicultural Art Book by Alexandra Michaels- This book is not one to read to students, but it is one that holds different art activities that students can do to learn about different cultures. Kids will remember more about that culture by making something that has to do with it than by just hearing it. This book holds ideas for 75 projects.
3. Interaction of People and the Environment- Students shall develop an understanding of the interactions between people and their environment.
The Polar Bears' Home: A Story about Global Warming by Lara Bergen- This is a book about a girl and her father who learn about polar bears and how global warming is affecting them. It also provides tips for children on how to slow down the process of global warming.
Michael Recycle by Ellie Bethel- This book is about a young boy who is a superhero and whose powers are flying around the world teaching people about recycling. People call him the planet's new savior.
Civics:
4. Government- Students shall develop an understanding of the forms and roles of government.
Out and About at City Hall by Nancy G. Attebury- Children go on a field trip to City Hall where they learn about the different roles of the city council, the mayor, and other city departments. This book also includes an activity.
What's a City Council? by Nancy Harris- This book teaches about leaders in the local government and the duties of a city council and how they play a role in law making.
5. Citizenship- Students shall develop an understanding of the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
Being a Leader by Cassie Mayer- Being a leader is a characteristic of citizenship. This book will help show kids how they can be good leaders.
History:
6. History- Students shall analyze significant ideas, events, and people in world, national, state, and local history and how they affect change over time.
A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr. by David A. Adler- This is a biography about Martin Luther King. It tells the story of how King was a civil rights leader who practiced nonviolent civil disobedience and how he helped many blacks win the battle for equal rights.
Economics:
7. Choices- Students shall analyze the costs and benefits of making economic choices.
The Kids' Money Book by Jamie Kyle McGillian- This book teaches kids about budgeting and helps them get started on planning things out such as saving, spending, investing, and donating. There is a lot of advice in this book that will help kids start to plan their futures, but also to understand that their economic choices do matter.
8. Resources- Students shall evaluate the use and allocation of human, natural, and capital resources.
From Seed to Salad by Hannah Lyons Johnson- This book provides instructions for kids on how to grow their own garden and plan for harvest. It also includes a few recipes for salad dressings.
Soil by Christin Ditchfield- This book is meant for elementary readers and teaches about natural resources. It includes sidebars, a glossary, an index, and a section that tells you about different organizations, books, and internet sites where you can find out more
9. Markets- Students shall analyze the exchange of goods and services and the roles of governments, businesses, and individuals in the market place.
A Day at the Market by Sara Anderson- This is a very colorful and engaging book in which Anderson takes readers on a trip with her to her favorite market place in Seattle. Readers will learn how the farmer's market looks and how it works.
